Why Perception Isn’t the Same as Truth
By Mark Dolan | Time Tested Mastery: Life Lessons Sell
There’s a simple idea that can change your life—if you’re willing to really hear it: Feelings aren’t facts.
That doesn’t mean feelings aren’t real. They absolutely are. We experience them intensely—in our bodies, our relationships, and our decisions. They shape how we see the world and how we respond to it.
But here’s the catch: while feelings are real, they’re not always reliable. They aren’t always grounded in truth. They’re informed by past experiences, personal bias, emotions, hormones, even how much sleep we got the night before.
And yet, too often, we treat our feelings like they’re gospel.
The Fog of “My Truth”
We live in a time where phrases like “my truth” get tossed around constantly. And I get it—people are trying to express themselves and validate their experiences. That matters.
But let’s be honest: what most people call “my truth” is often just a strong feeling… shaped by limited experience.
There is such a thing as universal truth. And while our personal experiences are valid, they’re not always complete. Truth—real truth—doesn’t shift every time we feel differently. But perception does. And that’s where things get complicated.
Perception is not reality. It’s just our reality—filtered through everything we’ve seen, felt, feared, and believed up to this point. And as we grow, perception changes. So should our conclusions.
How Experience Reshapes What We Believe
When we’re young, we tend to be idealistic. We see problems and want to fix them. We imagine a better world and believe we’re the ones to build it. And that idealism has its place—it’s often the fuel that leads to meaningful progress.
But as life unfolds, things change. We raise children. We pay taxes. We make mistakes. We live through market crashes, unexpected diagnoses, broken relationships, and hard-earned victories.
And that idealism often gives way to pragmatism. We begin to understand that good intentions don’t always lead to good results. We see the ripple effects of policies, decisions, and unchecked emotions.
The real world introduces nuance. Trade-offs. Consequences. Delayed gratification. And through it all, we begin to value preservation—not just progress.
It’s not about becoming cynical. It’s about becoming wise.
As I’ve said before, a principle from Freakonomics sums this up perfectly: “Morality is how we think things should be. Economics is how things actually are.”
That’s a line worth remembering. Because when you live long enough, you realize: outcomes matter. Emotion alone can’t build a life. Wisdom, patience, and clear thinking are required.
Keep Your Heart Open—But Guard Your Mind
So what’s the takeaway here?
Let your feelings guide you—but don’t let them govern you.
Let your emotions teach you—but don’t let them trap you.
Don’t confuse what you feel with what is.
The moment you start separating feeling from fact is the moment you begin mastering your mindset. And mindset, more than anything else, determines your direction in life.
And here’s a deeper truth worth sitting with:
While honoring your feelings is important and healthy, the most important question is this—
Does your response to your feelings empower you… or victimize you?
Does it place the responsibility for change in your hands—or someone else’s?
Does it bring peace and harmony—or resentment and conflict?
If your thoughts are dragging you down, it’s time to question the lens—not the world.
