Turning Knowledge Into Profit
While reading Brain Rules by John Medina, one passage stopped me in my tracks. Medina shares a fairly gruesome story about how geese are overfed so their livers swell unnaturally large for high‑end chefs to use in delicacies. Disturbing? Yes. But also a vivid analogy for what happens when we overload our own minds.
When we cram too much information into our brains, it becomes impossible to absorb, remember, and apply what we’re learning. Just like those overfed geese, we end up stuffed—but not stronger.
This insight hit me hard. I realized that when I coach and mentor others, I sometimes push too much, too fast. It took me 40 years to connect many of the dots in my own journey. How can I expect someone else to fully process deep truths overnight? Coaching requires patience, space, and time for growth.
Work With Your Brain, Not Against It
Medina’s research is fascinating because it shows how our brains are wired—and how we can set ourselves up for maximum performance. One of the takeaways is the support for practice and repetition.
When we repeat the fundamentals—scripts, dialogues, presentations, objections—they become automatic. Then, when stress hits, we perform at our best without even thinking. That’s brain science applied to sales mastery.
The Real Question for You
This all begs a simple, but powerful question:
- Do you have time built into your personal development plan for reflection and absorption?
- Are you trying to take in so much that it all rolls off your back like water on a duck?
- Have you invested the time to have a plan at all?
Information without application is wasted potential. But information with structure, patience, and practice becomes transformation.
